Journeying through scenic routes is a leisure activity I find much pleasure in. My appreciation of the Bay Area is partly due to its abundance of backroads with relaxing coastal views and striking redwood arched paths. CA Highway 84, better known as Niles Canyon Road, starts at the historic Niles District of Fremont and traverses the length of Niles Canyon to the small town of Sunol. I treasure this route, as it’s shared by two railroads where passengers are captivated by the California Poppies blanketing the canyon during the blooming season from February to May.
Venturing to the head of NIles Canyon Road, the trees and rolling hills of the canyon wrap around you, calming tensions and offering pleasant feelings that nature tends to give. Upon exiting you are welcomed by Sunol Corners Little Market, drive straight up to the spacious parking area to check out what this little market has to offer. Gaze over the options of fruits, like mangoes and pineapples displayed on the fruit stand at the front, a message of “FRESH COCONUTS!” screams for attention.
Let the fluorescent sign lure you inside to the loaded cooler of fresh green coconuts that can be purchased whole, or for an extra cost have cut up for a refreshing drink and hearty snack. After jiggling the coconuts to select the perfect one, take it back to the counter where it is shucked to uncover the juice that is bottled in a to-go cup, then carved for its meat to be plated in a container to take on the road. Make your way to the condiment station, where the meaty coconut chunks can be garnished to your liking with lime juice, tahin, and the other options available. Enjoy your treat either on one of the picnic benches situated out front of the market or with the view on the way back down to Fremont.
If ever buying a ticket for Niles Canyon Railway which starts at the Sunol station, or taking a drive through Niles Canyon Road, be sure to stop by Sunol Corners Little Market and grab a snack for the ride.
